New modeling tool helps companies easily identify relationships between data and processes

Boston – March 5, 2007 - Embarcadero Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: EMBT) today unveiled EA/Studio™ Business Modeler Edition at the DAMA International Symposium and Wilshire Meta-Data Conference. EA/Studio is a business process and conceptual modeling tool for connecting data models with business processes to align IT with business objectives.

EA/Studio enables organizations to show how data architectures and the database applications within the enterprise directly impact business processes, and vice versa. For example, using EA/Studio a business analyst or data modeler can link all the data assets that are used in order processing with a process model that shows the step-by-step fulfillment process, and then generate a list of all business processes that modify that order data. This insight enables companies to quickly and easily understand the impact that changes to the data or to a particular process will have prior to implementation.

“As market drivers enforce the need for various roles and constituencies across the enterprise to communicate effectively regarding core business processes and information, vendors need to keep pace with this – offering integration between areas of interest within the organization rather than stand-alone technologies,” said Michael Blechar, vice president and research director, Gartner, Inc. “Such integration, driven by common metadata, will promote reuse, increased efficiency, better communication and, ultimately, more efficient organizations.”

EA/Studio is a quick-to-master, low-cost tool for conceptual modeling, business process modeling, and creating traceable links between processes and data. By coupling clear visual diagramming with underlying semantic meta-data, organizations can reach consensus on how to better align processes and data. Conceptual, process and data models can be shared between EA/Studio and ER/Studio, Embarcadero’s flagship data modeling tool, for an integrated flow from business idea to SQL code generation, XML schemas and a variety of other outputs.

“We found EA/Studio to be a good companion product to ER/Studio,” said Andy Grohe, practice director for Project Leadership Associates (PLA). “It’s a great communications tool. We are using it internally on a client project to document their current process with conceptual data linkages. It is also very easy to use; there was a minimal learning curve. EA/Studio will allow us to communicate business process and data together with our clients rather than use separate process and data modeling tools.”

EA/Studio provides several features, including:

  • Business process modeling using BPMN - provides organizations with a graphical representation of their business processes as well as the means to communicate those processes using a standard notation created by the Object Management Group (OMG) of which Embarcadero Technologies is a member and key contributor.
  • Conceptual modeling – provides the framework for modeling core business concepts and data concepts, and linking them together. Conceptual models can be exported to ER/Studio to form the foundation of logical data models.
  • Microsoft® Visio® Import – business process models created using Visio can be imported into EA/Studio to associate business process models with data models.
  • CRUD Reporting - determine what processes create, read, update and delete data.
  • Built on Eclipse – EA/Studio is built upon the Eclipse Foundation’s Rich Client Platform (RCP) technology, simplifying the creation of new capabilities in the product in addition to enabling interplay with other Eclipse plug-ins.

“There is data, and then there is information. What lies between those two conjoined ideas is the problem space,” said Greg Keller, vice president of product management, Embarcadero Technologies. “Our leadership stance in the data modeling community through ER/Studio has given us the insight we required from that product’s customers - some of the largest and most progressive companies. Their problems in data and application management are obviously relative to their size: enormous. Developing EA/Studio in conjunction with these customers to assist in integrating their data assets with current and proposed business processes is the cornerstone of enabling them to turn their raw data into true information assets their businesses can depend on over and over again.”

Pricing and Availability
EA/Studio will be generally available worldwide on March 15, 2007. North American pricing begins at an introductory price of $495 per seat. For more information, visit http://www.embarcadero.com/products/eastudio.
